In the ongoing efforts to get a younger generation interested in farming, the political powers that be, have moved to make farming a service industry like; teachers, nurses and government service.

In an article written for the National Young Farmer's Coalition website  a bill introduced in the House of Representatives would make farming part of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

As the majority of existing farmers near retirement (the average age of the American farmer is 58), we will need at least 100,000 new farmers to take their place. But between 2007 and 2012, the number of young farmers increased by only 1,220.

In a nutshell, it would ease the burden of student loan repayments for younger people wanting to start a farming operation or return to the family farm.  Read the entire article here and get full details on House Bill 2590.
