Central New York is going to feel more like Central Florida today.  There is an excessive heat warning in effect until 8 tonight.  The hot and humid weather could cause dehydration, muscle cramps, severe headaches and heat exhaustion.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing and drink plenty of water.  If you're working outside, schedule frequent breaks and keep in the shade as much as possible.

Water - Find it somewhere, if you can today.  Take to the beach or a community pool.  If your neighbors have a pool, sneak a quick dip.  I'm sure they won't mind on a day as hot as today.  Or just wait until they aren't home.  Who is going to notice a quick dip

Hydrate - If you have to spend time out in the sun, make sure you have plenty of water.  Sodas and beer may taste good, but they won't do your body any good.  Water is the drink of the day today

Air conditioning - If you don't have any, go somewhere that does.  Take in a movie.  Afternoon matinees are fairly inexpensive and theaters are always air conditioned.  Head to the mall if for nothing more than to window shop and stay cool.

Fans - Blowing hot air around is probably not a good idea but if it's all you have try this trick - put a tray of ice cubes in front of the fan.  When the ice starts to melt, you'll feel a nice cool breeze.

The American Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley is offering a place to cool off today as well.  The offices at 1416 Genesee Street in Utica and 235 North Prospect Street in Herkimer will be open until 5pm for folks without air conditioning, to get away from the heat and have a cold drink.

How do you stay cool on a hot day?
