The Utica Curling Club will be hosting the 134 year old Gordon International Bonspiel March 15 -18 at its facility located at 8300 Clark Mills Road, Whitestown.
In 1884 Robert Gordon of the St. Andrews Curling Club of New York, presented the Gordon International Medal to the curlers of the United States, represented by the Grand National Curling Club an organization of Northeastern curling clubs, and Canada, represented by the Royal Caledonia Curling Club of Montreal, for a competition between the two countries.
Since 1890 the bonspiel has alternated between the U.S. and Canada and this will be the 26th time Utica has hosted the competition. Each country will enter 20 teams and play four matches, two friendlies and two competitive matches. The outcome of the bonspiel is determined by the total number of stones scored by each side in the two competitive Gordon Medal games.
Due to various complications the bonspiel has been held only 122 times out of its 134 year history. The Canadians have won 91 matches and the Americans 31, however, the U.S. has been victorious four out of the last seven years with three of their wins coming in Montreal.
