Big Squeeze Weekend raising funds for Bassett Medical Center’s Women’s Imaging Center

Mill to donate this Saturday’s cider sales for the Friends of Bassett Campaign.

Fly Creek, NY- The Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard will feature its 14th annual “Big Squeeze Weekend” October 5 and 6. The event is designed not only to increase awareness and early detection of breast cancer and the health benefits of apples but also to raise funds for the Friends of Bassett’s campaign to renovate and update the Women’s Imaging Center at Bassett Medical Center. All-day Saturday sales of fresh, sweet cider in both full gallons and halves will be donated to the Friends’ campaign.

Returning is Bassett Cancer Institute’s mobile medical screening coach. Cancer prevention and screening information will be offered on Saturday along with tours of the coach. On Sunday The Delaware, Otsego and Schoharie Counties’ Cancer Services Program will provide free health screenings for uninsured women over 40 and uninsured men over 50. There are no income requirements for the exams which include mammograms, pelvic, breast and pap tests.

“This successful Big Squeeze Weekend fundraiser is our way to kick-off Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

I lost my mom, a dear friend and team members to breast cancer. I’m proud to have our Mill help fund improvements to the Women’s Imaging Center. The Center provides more than 6,000 mammograms and 3,000 ultrasounds each year with information essential to maintaining women’s health,” states Brenda Michaels, co-owner of the Mill.

In addition the Mill will offer more than 8 different varieties of New York State-grown apples for sampling. A Cornell University study has identified a dozen compounds in apple peels called triterpenoids that either inhibit or kill cancer cells in laboratory cultures.

To schedule a free appointment Sunday call the Cancer Services Program at 888-345-0225.
