Elvis Presley: January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977 [VIDEO]

It was one of those days that we of a certain age will remember exactly where we were when we heard the news that Elvis Presley had died. It was August 16 1977, 35 years ago today, and he had been found lying on his bathroom floor, unresponsive, and rushed to a Memphis hospital where he was declared dead. He was 42 years old. The “King of Rock and Roll” was gone, never to be forgotten. If anything his legend has only grown larger over the years. How is he being remembered today?
This entire week is known as “Elvis Week” in Memphis with a packed schedule of events including, according to the Utica O-D, an unofficial appearance by Elvis impersonator Dennis Nickells of Vernon, . Everyone who grew up when he was in his prime remembers him as a talented but troubled innovator who became a captive of his own fame which led him to an isolated and sometimes lonely lifestyle, something chronicled in a number of books including former bodyguard Red West’s “”Elvis:What Happened” released just weeks before he died. This clip from his 1968 comeback special presents Elvis as I like to remember him, fit, energized and ready to rock and roll.
