Eating Chocolate Could Save Your Life

Sure, a headline like that is a slam dunk attention getter but the truth is that eating a small amount of dark chocolate every day can lessen your chances of suffering a stroke or heart attack. A report on HealthDay.com states that Australian researchers found that daily consumption of 3.5 ounces of dark chocolate lessened the chances of stroke and heart attack in high risk individuals. How so?
Apparently it has to do with the chemical composition of dark chocolate.
Dark chocolate is rich in flavonoids, antioxidant substances known to have heart protective effects. Until now, the potential benefits of dark chocolate on heart health have only been examined in short-term studies. The researchers determined that 100 percent compliance with eating dark chocolate every day could potentially prevent 70 non-fatal and 15 fatal cardiovascular events per 10,000 people over 10 years, while 80 percent compliance could prevent 55 non-fatal and 10 fatal cardiovascular events.
Unfortunately this healthy benefit is only available for dark chocolate lovers and not for those who prefer milk chocolate.
