Not only did heavy June rain hamper 2015 corn, hay and strawberry crops, Cornell Cooperative Extension's Jeff Miller says the last 3 years have seen "extreme rainfall events." Now is the time to consider drainage for next season, and CCE is presenting Drainage Workshop to help with your decision.

The 2013, 2014 and 2015 growing seasons all had soil saturation for long enough periods of time to cause oxygen deprivation in crop plants which reduced crop yields. It was easy to find cornfields where plant height was 3-5ft in some areas and 12ft in other areas of the same field. Alfalfa fields that have tall vibrant alfalfa swards with sometimes large areas devoid of alfalfa. We all remember seeing our crops poking up in the ponds that were in our fields.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida-Madison and the Central NY Dairy and Field Crops team are sponsoring a tile drainage workshop on December 9th from 9:30-3pm at the American Legion, 8083 State Rte 20, in the town of Sangerfield. The event will cover the economics and agronomic benefits of drainage, conservation compliance, the use of aerial photos and GIS to site tile lines, the installation and maintenance of tile drainage systems and minimizing environmental risks of drainage water.

The cost of the workshop is $13 per person which includes lunch. Please pre-register by December 2nd by calling 315-866-7920.  Get more details
