'The Voice' goes live tonight and James David Carter from #TeamBlake is excited. He took time to talk with us about his time so far on the NBC reality show. 'I'm pumped for that energy you're going to get from the live audience and knowing everyone at home is watching.'

Carter received a four chair turn during the blind auditions with his performance of 'Nobody Knows,' but it was Blake Shelton who won him over. In the battle rounds he moved on with Pat Green's 'Wave on Wave.' But during the knockout round, Carter steered away from his country roots and performed James Taylor's 'You've Got a Friend.' 'I wanted to give people a glimpse of who I am as an artist every week. For the knockout round I wanted to show the singer/songwriter side of me.'

Growing up, Carter actually leaned how to play guitar listening to James Taylor records. 'It was a honor to get to play one of his songs. I was really just hoping I didn't screw it up.'

Not only did Carter not screw it up, his version charted on iTunes and proved trusting his gut was the right way to go. 'Anytime I've trusted my instincts when it comes to music, 99% of the time it's been the right choice for me.'

What's Carter's secret to success? 'You can get in this environment with other talented people and feel like you have to do things you wouldn't normally do. Everything you've seen so far, I've just been able to be myself. I not trying to be something I'm not.'

Although Carter can't tell us what's he's singing for the live show, he can say it's something we haven't seen or heard from him yet. 'I'm switching gears and it's going to be a whole lot more light-hearted. If you're a country music fan, it's definitely recognizable.'
