Deer Antler Spray-The New Sports Performance Enhancer?
First it was Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis. Now Fox Sports is reporting that veteran golfer Vijay Singh has also admitted to using deer antler spray which contains a performance enhancer banned by the PGA Tour. What exactly is this deer antler stuff?
Deer-antler spray and pills contain a hormone called IGF-1 that is thought to help muscle recovery. The hormone is harvested from deer in New Zealand. Deer antlers are the fastest-growing substance on planet Earth . . . because of the high concentration of IGF-1. We’ve been able to freeze dry that out, extract it, put it in a sublingual spray that you shake for 20 seconds and then spray three [times] under your tongue.
Singh released a statement saying, ”While I have used deer-antler spray, at no time was I aware that it may contain a substance that is banned under the PGA Tour Anti-Doping Policy”. Fellow golfer Bubba Watson left no question as to how he feels about those who have used it.
I’m not just going to take something and ask questions later. I’m not going to take deer antler-spray and find out what it is later. … I think we should check them for mental problems if they’re taking deer-antler spray. That’s kind of weird.”
