The DEC is asking for help in locating black bear dens for ongoing monitoring and wildlife research.

Bears den in all sorts of different locations, not just a cave. They could be found in a rock crevice, tree cavity, or under heavy brush or fallen tree. If you hear a high-pitched squeal, it could be bear cubs, and you're near a den. The DEC says, If anyone finds a bear den, DEC strongly urges the public to not approach or disturb the den, but simply to note the location and move away from the den site.

If you know of a bear den, the DEC asks that you call the Wildlife office.
