The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has decided to close the popular hiking trail due to safety concerns.

If you've ever hiked the Wakely Mountain trail, you're probably familiar with the fire tower that sits at the trail's summit.

That fire tower is what is prompting the concerns of the DEC.

In December 2016 the tower itself was closed to the public because it had significant structural problems.

Now, the entire trail is being closed because the condition of the tower has gotten much worse. So bad in fact that DEC officials are worried strong winds could topple the tower and possibly injure anyone in the area.

So until further notice, the Wakely Mountain trail will stay closed.

The DEC says they will begin repairs as soon as possible to prevent the tower from collapsing.

Wakely Mountain is located in the Adirondack Park, between Speculator/Lake Pleasant and Blue Mountain Lake.
