Dark Chicken Meat Gaining in Popularity
This weekend, Memorial Day weekend, is the traditional beginning of the summer grilling season and a change is brewing with regards to chicken meat. According to the National Chicken Council dark meat is closing the popularity gap between it and white meat.
“The growth in popularity of dark meat cuts can be attributed to four factors, really: an interest in its flavor, its popularity in more globally inspired dishes, generally a lower price point and its attributes that make it better suited to the direct heat of a grill,” said Tom Super, vice president of communications with the NCC. “Chicken sausages are also finding their way on to more and more grills, too.”
White meat is still preferred accounting for 56% of chicken meat sales but with those thighs and drumsticks gaining in popularity it’s turning into a real horse…no, chicken, race!
