Did you think growing mushrooms for profit was a scam?  I know I always did.  It's a legitimate business, and quickly spreading in the NorthEast.  Cornell's Small Farms Program says "low cost startup," is making it even more popular.

Cornell offers a Forest Mushroom Cultivation website, complete with videos, on how to grow and cultivate a variety of mushrooms.

..due to the abundance of forest resources and the relative low-cost of startup operations. Forest cultivated mushrooms offer an excellent quality and high nutritional value food crop and are gaining popularity around the temperate regions of the US.

One of the drawbacks to mushroom crops in the past has been the unwillingness of insurance companies to provide coverage.  In some cases, even dropping coverage on an existing farms' other operations.  The Small Farms Program working with the New York Farm Bureau and Nationwide Insurance have alleviated the problem in 2015.  You'll find more details on insurance here, and the "how-to's" on growing mushrooms here.
