Chase Rice, ‘Three Chords & the Truth’ [Listen]

Chase Rice‘s new single “Three Chords & the Truth” is a country tribute to country music. The singer weaves his story into what ultimately ends up becoming a love song.

It doesn’t start out like that, however. The first verse is about the draw of Music City, with Rice referring to his own journey from North Carolina many years ago. The song evolves from there, always coming back to the idea that Nashville (as a metaphor) is not the flower but the seed of a country singer’s life.

Rice and co-writers Ross Copperman and Jon Nite name check several country songs through the verses and variations of each chorus. Several are indeed “Three Chords & the Truth” while others like “Amazing Grace” are just staples. Unlike his previous hits, there’s nothing aggressive about this new song. It’s a more organic approach from a singer who says he’s ready to bare his soul.

Did You Know?: “Three Chords & the Truth” is Rice’s first single from his upcoming Lambs & Lions album (Sept. 29).

Chase Rice, “Three Chords & the Truth” Lyrics:

There’s a Tennessee two-lane sky / Shades of Broadway bars at night / Makes you wanna get a little too close to a Cali girl watching windshield satellites / It’s the soundtrack to our lives / It’s the only reason why / A kid from Carolina would drive to Nashville to chase a dream without a dime.

Chorus:
It’s why we drink too much on Friday nights / Raise our hand in the neon lights / Sweet Home Alabama and a Ring of Fire / I could sing along til the day I die / Why we break up, fall back in love / Why we roll around in the bed of a truck / Why we all stop when we hear that one, and she whispers turn it up / For a second we’re bulletproof / We get lost in a song or two / The world don’t move and all I need is you and three chords and the truth.

I see you blinkin’ through your blue eyes / How a song could turn back time / You can almost feel the sand on your feet, from the passenger seat / Singing Anything But Mine / And don’t you know / We were raised on the radio.

Second Chorus:
It’s why we drink too much on Friday nights / Raise our hand in the neon lights / Copperhead Road and Mama Tried / I could sing along til the day I die …

It’s Muscle Shoals to rock and roll / It’s a steel guitar that steals your soul / It’s a country song that takes you home again.

Third Chorus:
It’s why we drink too much on Friday nights / Raise our hand in church pew aisles / Amazing Grace and Sweet By and By / I could sing along til the day I die …
