We may have had a couple of rough winter months complete with cold temperatures and a lot of snow, but we have to be grateful it wasn't anything like what a town in Australia had to go through. The Town of Chinchilla, without warning, was hit with a huge hailstorm on Saturday night that dropped softball-sized hail stones from the sky causing major damage!
There is no question that this winter has been an awful one, but for our Canadian neighbors to the North it has been really bad. For Marcel Landry, the record snowfall in his town of Summerside left him trapped in his home, at least until he decided to dig a path. You'll never believe what is at the end of the tunnel that took him 6 hours to dig.
Have you ever seen a slurpee wave? Surfer/photographer Jonathan Nimerfroh captured a wave almost frozen over in Nantucket. He tells Stay Wild Magazine, "It's just been super cold here. The harbor to the main land is frozen solid. No boats running. But yea, the day after I took these it actually froze up the shoreline for 200 yards out. Solid ice. I was totally tripping when I pulled up to the beach and saw this."
This has been one of the coldest winters on record for not just Central New York, but the whole country. New York City is no exception and one group called OckTV, did a social experiment to test the kindness of strangers.
Congratulations are in order for Boonville New York for being #1. It's the coldest place for the month of February. Even colder than Alaska, according to the National Weather Service. This is the one list we DON'T want to be at the top of!
In one aspect, the winter of 2015 is the coldest on record. The National Weather Service office in Binghamton says a record has been broken in Syracuse for the most days below zero in one calendar year.
A Nottoway High School senior was driving with his mother when he noticed an elderly man with a walker shoveling. He made his mother stop the car so that he could assist the old man. It's not every day you see people going out of their way to help someone else.
