January 24, 2013 It's a sign of the times. Dish Network, the parent company of Blockbuster, has announced it will be closing about 300 stores and eliminating some 3000 jobs. I remember when going to Blockbuster to rent videos and later DVD's meant hoping that your favorite would still be in stock and then waiting in long lines to check out. Things have changed.

Jason Aldean is a dead man... at least in the movies! Aldean will make his big screen debut as an actor in the film 'Sweetwater,' in which he stars alongside January Jones and Ed Harris. He plays a henchmen who eventually meets his maker in the action western.

January 10, 2013 My wife and I are Trekkers (that's the proper word, not Trekkies), so when a new Star Trek film is on the way, we're excited about it. Even though "Star Trek, Into Darkness" doesn't open until May 17th, for Trekkers that means it's almost here! We're both fans of the "classic cast" featuring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy (Kirk and Spock), so we're even more interested in the new films as the story line is about the early days of those characters.

January 3, 2013 My wife and I went to see a terrific movie yesterday called "Silver Linings Playbook". On our way out I asked the girl at the ticket office what new movies were opening this weekend, the reason being my wife is looking forward to seeing the upcoming Matt Damon film "Promised Land". The girl said, "No, it's not starting this weekend but 'Texas Chainsaw 3-D' is". Swell. I suppose if you're a horror fan that's good news. Check out the trailer and then local theater show times.

YouTubeI admit to being a bit of a snob when it comes to movies. Most of the big blockbuster shoot-em-up, romantic fantasy, animated family, science fiction releases leave me cold. However when looking over my favorites for the year 2012 I noticed that there was a rare--for me--mix of commercial hits mixed in with the small, indie films I tend to enjoy. My "Top 5" in no particular order for 2012.
