Car Accidents Increase on Tax Deadline Day

Today is the deadline for filing your federal tax returns and if those returns weren’t headache enough now comes word that it is also one of the most accident prone days of the year for drivers. Maybe it’s the worrying about getting those returns down to post office in time or maybe it’s just pre-occupation but, according to MSNBC, there is a 6% higher risk of being involved in a fatal accident on tax day than on any other comparable day. Experts say “pressure” is the most likely cause.
According to Elaine Smith of H&R Block,
The most pressure comes from simply putting off the chore until the last minute, Smith says. Other folks are frazzled because of changes in their tax situation — a new house, retirement, a child leaves home. They’ve always been getting a refund and they’re afraid this year that they’re going to owe,” she said.
Apparently, that stress translates into more traffic accidents.

Just FYI, the main post office in Utica on Pitcher Street closes at 6PM.
