Kevin James in an episode of King of Queens once said "If eating hotdogs is wrong, I don't want to be right." Well, according to the World Health Organization eating hotdogs, bacon, and other processed meats may not just be wrong, it may be deadly. A recent study warns that eating these foods could be as damaging as smoking cigarettes.

The International Agency for Cancer Research recently determined that there is an increased risk in colorectal cancer when the amount of processed meat is consumed. According to an article on The USA Today website,

The IARC said it considered more than 800 studies that investigated possible links between a dozen types of cancer with the consumption of red meat or processed meat in many countries and populations with diverse diets.

The experts concluded that each 50 gram — about 1.75 ounce — portion of processed meat eaten daily increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18%, the IARC said.

Steak, bacon, and other salty meats are admittedly not great everyday, but on the weekends and holidays, it is a joy! Hopefully these studies are just precautions. I already quit smoking, I would hate to quit bacon!
