One thing we learned from our Farm Hands tour around CNY this year was that many farms run short of silage before the new crop is ready.  While the drought conditions aren't helping this year's crop,Cornell Cooperative Extension's Jeff Miller thinks it may bring a new opportunity to dairy farmers.
With corn prices declining and drought affecting this year's yields, Jeff says "some of the growers in our area have planted corn for grain that they may be willing to sell as silage to growers who need this forage."  Whether you're buying or selling, determining the price can be tricky.

CCE has developed a calculator that will help determine a price that is fair to both buyers and sellers.  To get copy of the calculator, call Jeff at 315-736-3394, office hours are 8:30 to 4:40 Mon-Fri.  You can also get more information on estimating yields and pricing at CCE's web page.
