Bears in central and upstate New York is nothing unusual but one on a college campus is another story. A bear was seen at Herkimer College and school officials are asking students to be careful when walking to class.

The bear was seen on the Nature Trail on campus Wednesday, September 13th.

School officials warned students on Facebook to avoid approaching, surrounding, or cornering a bear. Don't run. Stay calm, speak in a loud and calm voice, slowly back away and leave the area. "Bears aggressively defend themselves when they feel threatened. Be especially cautious around cubs as mother bears are very protective."

If you see a bear on campus, you're asked to contact Campus Safety at (315) 866-0300 ext. 8616.

This isn't the first bear sighting on a college campus. Another was spotted at Oswego University last Fall.
