BBC World News To Feature Sherrill’s Aqua Vita Farms

A local business will be getting world class coverage today as Sherrill’s Aqua Vita Farms is featured on the BBC World News program “Horizons”. According to Syracuse.com the owner of the business Mark Doherty was contacted earlier this year and agreed to have his aquaponics farming operation spotlighted in a segment devoted to innovative solutions to food production. What exactly are “aquaponics”?
Aquaponics blends aquaculture, or fish farming, with hydroponics, growing plants without soil. At Aqua Vita, four 5,000-gallon fish tanks filled with blue gill provide nutrients for100-foot long plant beds, where lettuce seedlings float on rafts. Pumps return the water to the tanks after it has been naturally filtered by the plants, and the process starts over.
The show will be aired on BBC World News and only Verizon Fios and certain satellite subscribers will have direct access to the program. However it may be viewed later horizonsbusiness.com.
