Augusta National Still Silent On Allowing Women Members

We have had two women run for the Vice-Presidency, three serve as Secretary of State, dozens serve in public office and thousands serve in our Armed Forces but, so far, no women have been given membership at Augusta National. This has become as issue again this week as the club hosts the Masters Golf Tournament which includes IBM as a corporate sponsor, a corporate sponsor whose CEO is–you guessed it–a woman.
The club has a long tradition of inviting sponsor CEO’s to become members but since IBM’s head honcho Virginia Rometty this tradition is in jeopardy. Augusta National Chairman Billy Payne has thus far deflected questions.
“All issues of membership are now and have been historically subject to the private deliberations of the members,” Payne said, repeating the statement in the same fashion several times when repeatedly pressed on the matter.
