“Amish Mafia”: Bogus or Reality

The Discovery Channel show “Amish Mafia” would seem to be far fetched: the plain living peaceful Amish people acting like thugs to seek redress for wrongs, real or perceived. This begs the question, “Are we talking reality or fantasy here?”
According to a report by YNN the answer is clear.
“There’s no secret Amish organizations. There’s no brotherhood that aims to make life good for the plain people. Nothing like the Amish Mafia,” said Professor Karen Johnson-Weiner, an Amish researcher and a anthropology professor at SUNY Potsdam.

The professor goes on to say that some show members are not Amish which casts doubt on the title, “Amish Mafia”. It’s no surprise that some members of the Amish community are upset with the depiction.
Recently, a member of the Amish community wrote a letter to a Lancaster newspaper. “With a heavy heart I write this, hoping to convey that this TV production ‘Amish Mafia’ causes us much grief. Those characters are not Amish,” said Sam Stoltzfus, in a letter to the Intelligencer Journal.

We all know there is little–if any–reality in “reality TV” but when the depiction is this far from the truth and offends an entire community it may be time to pull the plug.
