A Vegetarian World By 2050?

Remember when you were a kid and your folks told you to “Eat your vegetables”? Well, according to a report from the Stockholm International Water Institute bythe year 2050 we may not have a choice. Scientists at the Institute say, “There will not be enough water available on current croplands to produce food for the expected 9 billion population in 2050 if we follow current trends and changes towards diets common in western nations.” So why just veggies?
The bottom line is the increasing scarcity of water in many parts of the world. The scientists say, “Humans now derive about 20% of their daily protein intake from animal-based products. But a new report published by the institute says the world’s population will have to cut that figure to 5% by 2050 to accommodate the planet’s “considerable regional water deficits. A third of current farmland is used to grow crops that feed animals. Additionally animal protein-rich food consumes five to 10 times more water than a vegetarian diet.” It’s a dire prediction and one that may or may not hold up to scientific fact but worth thinking about nonetheless.
