Over 50 cows are now dead after a barn fire in Lewis County.

Fire officials report that a dairy barn ignited on West Road at about 5:33AM on Monday January 23rd trapping roughly 56 head of cattle inside.

Officials said the barn was fully involved when the firefighter arrived and he woke the sleeping owner, Daniel Hrim. The owner was able to pull some farm equipment from the barn before the fire became too intense."

At least there is some positive news, a calf and a goat were rescued from the flames. Currently the Rome Daily Sentinel reports that one person was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
